Out of My Comfort Zone

This is truly outside of my comfort zone. I painted this on canvas and I attempted painting a face. I usually don't paint on canvas because I would hate to ruin it. Also I used acrylic paint instead of watercolors and pen. I've been reading an art book about skin tones. I am not happy with her nose and hair. My daughter says she looks very disco. More practice needed.

Nice work for a first try! She may look "disco" to your daughter, but she strikes me as a modern Modigliani. Stick with it, and don't be afraid to paint on canvas. You can always do what all great painters have done if you don't like what you've made: paint over it!

Hi, coming from IMT...Love your painting..kind of funny because this is EXACTLY what I did..a painting of me (going to be a paper doll) Like I told Lily, I will post on my blog tomorrow for everyone to see! Here's to us for not letting our 'perfectionism on paper to take over ;}

Love it! I like your style. I really like the shading on the pink headband and the shape of the eyes.

Looks great! I have the same problem with using canvas :)

I think she is beautiful. I wish I could do faces at all and I think you are being too hard on yourself.

I find skin tones super hard. So I give you extra bonus points for this one. A great risk outside your comfort zone. I like how the neck looks particularly. Not sure why. Hmmm.

Good job especially for a fist try. I am trying to do the same thing only I did not have as much luck drawing the face on the canvas. I had to transfer it from paper.

Youve been very brave and I like what you've got. I think you've done a good job with the hair - thats something I always struggle with.

Great painting! Your daughter is right: The woman looks funky. I also think faces are the hardest thing to do.

It's really interesting to see what is outside of your comfort zone. This is where I would feel cozy.

I like it. She is fresh, bold and expressionistic. I hope this is just the beginning of many more to come.

This painting has so much energy - it's very expressionistic! The wonderful thing about working with acrylics is that you can keep working over what's beneath - so much more forgiving than watercolors! This is great:>
