IF:Pet Peeve: Throwing trash out the car window!

When I was growing up there was this commercial ad about "Keeping America Beautiful." They depicted a family on vacation and they were throwing trash out their car window. Standing by the roadside was a Native American the trash landed at his feet. He turned around and had a tear running down his face. I don't know if that would be PC these days but that commercial has been my moral compass. It really bothers me to see people dump trash out of their car window. Recently we were at the drive-thru window at Taco Bell. The people in front of me were throwing their trash out the window onto the driveway. The first time they threw something out I was enraged, then they threw out more stuff while they where waiting to get their food. I couldn't take it any more so I rolled down my window and told them to stop littering. My children think I'm crazy but I just couldn't take it anymore.

I remember that ad! It probably wouldn't be PC today, but it made an impression on me. Your drawing also makes a strong impression - the big eye seeing the senseless dumping of garbage out of the car. What do people think? Garbage all over the place just isn't pretty!

Yep, very annoying. Nice, clever way of portraying this.

I agree with your pet peeve. I remember the TV commercial you referred to, and it's a sad comment that you should even HAVE a pet peeve on keeping America clean! Anyway, I like the point of view you've chosen, having the act reflected in the eye of the witness. Nice!

Wow! Thought-provoking illustration and wonderful line work, too! I remember that ad, and I remember the impact it had on me! It's funny, I thought of that ad when I read that pet peeve would be the word this week for IF! Thank you for doing such a great job with it and bringing back that memory! I absolutely hate littering! Great Job!

My friend and I were recently discussing about how technology has become so integrated in our day to day lives. Reading this post makes me think back to that discussion we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Societal concerns aside... I just hope that as technology further advances, the possibility of uploading our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's a fantasy that I dream about every once in a while.

Just today I witnessed this while stopped at an intersection in my town and I immediately got into a rage. I blasted my horn at the car for about 10-15 seconds and later flipped them the bird. My girlfriend thinks I went a little overboard but I know for a fact that I got my message across loud and clear. I treat such incidents as an insult to the earth and the people that maintain out cities.
